LA Looking to Pilot Healthy School Fundraisers

Posted on March 26th, 2016

The Health Promotion Team of the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) Office of Public Health (OPH) and Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI) are working together with schools to pilot healthy fundraising alternatives that meet both the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Louisiana Smart Snacks guidelines. These guidelines were developed with the goal of offering healthier snack foods to children and improving the overall school health environment.

Challenges exist around finding fundraising opportunities that comply with the state and federal Smart Snacks guidelines. Many of the fundraisers that are not in compliance bring in large revenue to help fund programs that could possibly be cut without these funding streams. Consequently, we understand that enforcement and compliance are not always a priority in schools when faced with other challenges.

To help find solutions to these challenges, The Health Promotion Team and LPHI will work with schools to assess current fundraising practices and work to find healthy fundraising alternatives that meet the Smart Snacks guidelines in schools. Input from schools is vital in shaping the importance of healthy fundraising in Louisiana. This project has three main components. First, LPHI will work with schools to assess their current practices around fundraising. Second, LPHI and Health Promotion will work with schools to gather success stories on healthy fundraising that meet the Smart Snacks guidelines. Finally, Health Promotion and LPHI will work together to create the Well Ahead Louisiana Healthy Fundraising toolkit that includes Louisiana-specific fundraising alternatives.

We are looking for schools to participate in the assessment. This assessment will provide valuable information and help the team learn more about the successes and challenges of following the Smart Snacks guidelines, specifically for fundraisers. LPHI will work with selected schools and key stakeholders at each school to implement the assessment and provide technical assistance and guidance to any school with questions about the assessment. The assessment will be simple and straightforward and will allow us to identify specific strategies around healthy fundraising in Louisiana schools.

To participate in the School Healthy Fundraising assessment, please contact Guenevere Hoy at ghoy@lphi.org or 504-325-2682 by Friday, April 1.

Host a Professional Athlete at Your School

Posted on October 23rd, 2015

Let’s Move! Active Schools has teamed up with Athletes for Hope to place shining examples of “active and healthy” in area schools. The great news is that Let’s Move! Active Schools is the Healthy Schools Program’s physical activity and physical education strategy, so all schools enrolled in the Healthy Schools Program will be able to easily enroll and transfer information to Let’s Move! Active Schools, and unlock new resources and tools.
Through the program, Professional, Olympic or Collegiate Student-Athletes visit schools to speak with students about why Active Kids Do Better, and how to establish a lifetime of healthy fitness and exercise habits. The athletes also demonstrate fun ways to move and share personal experiences with the students.
To be eligible for this opportunity, your school must be signed up for Let’s Move! Active Schools. If you are not yet enrolled in Let’s Move! Active Schools but enrolled in the Healthy Schools Program, visit www.letsmoveschools.org, log in using your Healthy Schools Program information, and then IMPORT your Assessment
Schools will be selected on a first come, first served basis. Although Athletes for Hope will make its best effort to connect student-athletes to interested schools, there is no guarantee a connection will be made.
If your school would like to be considered for an athlete speaking engagement, please contact Chris Wyttenbach (Director, Athletes for Hope) at cwyttenbach@athletesforhope.org.

LAHPERD receives over $30K for JRFH/HFH efforts

Posted on September 8th, 2015

From Executive Director Bill Dickens

We have just received our allotment from the 2014-2015 Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart community service project with the American Heart Association.  Louisiana AHPERD’s share of the monies raised by the children and JRFH/HFH Coordinators in Louisiana is a whopping  $30,934.76. These monies will go to help fund the efforts by LAHPERD to contribute to the quality health and physical education programs in the schools of Louisiana.

Our hats go off and a hearty thanks to Joanna Faerber, LAHPERD Joint Projects Coordinator, and all of the school coordinators for their efforts.  None of it could have been accomplished without the thousands of school children and their parents who have made a commitment to this project.

Coordinators and students — Thank you very much for your time, energy and dedication to the efforts to fund heart disease and stroke research in America.

SHAPE America Keeps Students Moving to Boost Learning

RESTON, VA, August 25, 2015 — SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators has just announced the launch of a new Back to School website with numerous resources for K-12 health and physical education teachers.

From a free digital Scope & Sequence chart to all the information needed to develop a comprehensive school physical activity program, the website will help teachers keep students moving to boost learning. Resources include:

“No one is better prepared to get kids healthier and more physically active than K-12 health and physical education teachers,” says SHAPE America President Stephen Jefferies of Central Washington University. “Collectively as a profession we regularly spend time with students during the most significant developmental years of their lives. We are the first to develop relationships that will lead students to valuing their health and active lifestyles.”

To ensure that all of America’s students develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to enjoy healthy, meaningful physical activity, SHAPE America recently launched its “50 Million Strong by 2029” initiative. The organization invites all health and physical education teachers to become part of this national initiative by enhancing health and physical education programs in their schools and providing opportunities for students to meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity before, during and after school.

Teachers who say “Count Me In” will receive a free digital Scope & Sequence chart. The chart:

Support P.E. as Core Subject – Make Your Voice Heard

Posted on April 10th, 2015

ADVOCACY REQUEST TO LAHPERD FROM SHAPE AMERICA:

From: Carly Braxton [mailto:CBraxton@shapeamerica.org]
Sent: Thursday, April 09, 2015 10:06 AM
To: ‘GMO@LIONMANFoundation.org’; Joanna D Faerber; ‘William Dickens’
Subject: Louisiana – PEP help!
Importance: High

Hi all,

We need Louisiana’s help!  The Senate just introduced a bipartisan Elementary and Secondary Education Act proposal.  The Senate education committee will mark-up and vote on the bill next week.  The GREAT news is that physical education was included as a core subject in the bill!!

The PEP grant was eliminated in the Senate’s ESEA bill that was introduced yesterday.  Senator Tammy Baldwin from Wisconsin is planning on introducing PEP as an amendment to the bill next week.  Her office is hoping to find a Republican to cosponsor this amendment with her.  Can you help us by reaching out to Louisiana AHPERD members to contact Senator Cassidy by phone (202.224.5824), via Twitter @BillCassidy, and through her website (http://www.cassidy.senate.gov/content/contact-bill) and ask that she support the inclusion of PEP in ESEA.

Grandmaster – Below is an email that you can send directly to Pam Davidson, since you met with her in person.  Please ask the Louisiana AHPERD membership to use the website to send emails (staffers don’t like to be inundated with emails to their personal email inbox) or call and tweet the office.

Thank you very much and please let me know if you have any questions and if you get a response.

###

Pam_davidson@cassidy.senate.gov

Dear Senator Cassidy (or Pam),

It is my understanding that ESEA is scheduled to be marked up next week.  Congratulations!  Please thank your colleagues, Senators Alexander and Murray, on our behalf for including physical education as a core subject in their bipartisan bill.  I ask that you support their efforts and physical education’s inclusion in this special designation.

Senator, you are well known for your efforts to address and reduce obesity as it is certainly an issue for us in Louisiana.  I hope you’ll agree that physical education is an important piece of curbing this epidemic.   I wanted to share the impact that the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) program has had on the children of Louisiana and our nation.  PEP has been incredibly successful as the ONLY federal program specifically designated for physical education.  It helps to fuel innovation in physical education and helps to ensure that best practices are being used.  I hope you will support an amendment to reinstate the PEP grant, which will be offered at next week’s markup by your colleague Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin.

In the past decade we have seen physical education marginalized in our schools – more often than not, the lack of designation as a core subject is cited by school leadership – so to say that we are thrilled to have it included in this reauthorization is an understatement!!!  We hope that you’ll take your colleagues’ commitment to the health and wellness of our youth one step further by supporting Senator Baldwin and reinstate the PEP grant.

Thank you for your consideration and best of luck in your efforts to reauthorize ESEA.  Please let me know if I can provide any assistance or further information.

Proposed Constitution and Bylaw revisions

Posted on September 6th, 2014

Proposed Changes to the Constitution and By Laws

The LAHPERD Board of Directors approved changes to the definitions of professional members and future professional/student members at its September 5th board meeting. The changes allow the definitions to revert to the original definitions of the Constitution and By-Laws. The changes are necessary to allow all professional members in both educational and community worksites and all future professional/student members to be eligible for the new liability insurance carrier in 2015-16. The Board of Directors also approved a change in the dues structure due to the change in insurance carriers. The current and proposed changes are provided for review. The membership will be asked to vote either “YES” for the proposed changes or “NO“ against the proposed changes at the November  2014 convention. The current definitions are in normal print while the proposed changes are in bold.

PROPOSED CHANGE #1

Article ll. Membership

Section 1. Professional members shall consist of persons actively engaged in the various    areas of Association concern.

(1) Professional-Education members are defined as those working in educational unit such as K-12 grade-schools and colleges and universities, and includes members in full-time roles such as teachers, teacher-coaches, teacher aides, school nurses, supervisors/administrators, and teachers of other subject areas, i.e., Math, English, Social Studies, Science, etc.

(2) Professional-Community members are defined as those working in areas such as fitness/exercise, health organizations, wellness programs, private instructors of dance/gymnastics/tumbling/cheerleading, city/parish/private recreation, personal     trainers, athletic trainers, therapeutic exercise, YMCA, part-time athletic coaches in schools, etc.

Proposed change (presented as it will appear on ballot):

Section 1. Professional members shall consist of persons actively engaged in the various areas of Association concern. This includes Honorary Life members and active Retired members.

PROPOSED CHANGE #2

Section 2. Student members shall include students attending institutions that prepare individuals as future professionals for various areas of Association concern. Only student members shall vote and be elected to hold office in the Future Professional Section. There are two categories of student members:

(1) Student – individual enrolled as full-time student in a program related to the various areas of the Association.

(2) Student-Practicum – students involved in curriculum-based practicum experiences, such as student teaching or internships.

Proposed change (as it will appear on the ballot):

Section 2. Future professional members shall include students attending institutions that prepare individuals for various areas of Association concern. Only future professional members shall vote and be elected to hold office in the Future Professional Section.

PROPOSED CHANGE #3

The proposed membership changes group the current “Professional-Education” and “Professional-Community” into “Professional members” and the ”Student” and “Student-Practicum” into “Future Professional members.” This is being requested to allow for members to be covered by a new insurance carrier in 2015-16.

The proposed dues structure reduces the professional membership fee by $5.00 and increases the future professional/student membership by $10. All members except the Honorary Life and Retiree members will be covered in the liability insurance. Members who apply for membership online will no longer be assessed the PayPal fee.

The LAHPERD Board of Directors recommends that the dues for Professional members be changed to $60 and the dues for Future Professional members changed to $35 with both categories receiving professional liability insurance, excluding liability insurance for the Honorary Life and Retiree categories of professional membership.

LAHPERD’s Past President Thanks Members

Posted on February 20th, 2014

venessa livingstonMy year as president went by faster than I could ever imagine.  It was a very challenging year as we all know.  I learned so much and am grateful for all the help throughout my reign as president. On behalf of the entire LAHPERD Board, we would like to express our thanks to all of you. We have received a lot of very positive feedback in respect to the organization, activities, and the convention sessions, which are highly appreciated. Convention was a huge success, and that is due to our amazing sponsors, volunteers, presenters, and everyone who attended. Your presence helped to make this event a great success, and your enthusiasm and positive spirit helped make this convention productive and fun.

We thank you for your comments and suggestions and we assure you that each will be given consideration so that future conferences and events will be even more of a success.  We wish you all the best and hope that you continue to be involved with LAHPERD.

Again, on behalf of LAHPERD’s Board of Directors, we want to thank you for attending our 79th Annual Convention, “JAZZIN’ IT UP WITH TECHNOLOGY”, and we hope to see you for our 80th year celebration.

Sincerely,

Venessa Livingston-Cormier
